COURSE DESCRIPTION: Supervised classroom service learning projects. Gain practical experience in professional business practices. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours. Prerequisite: sophomore standing in Graphic Design, 3.0 program GPA, or approval of instructor or department chair.

CREDIT: Upon completion of this course, students will receive 3 credits towards their degree. This course consists of 1 hour of lecture plus 12 hours of lab per week. Students should expect to spend 10 hours of lab per week completing "homework" assignments independently. Time sheet record-keeping is required.

OBJECTIVE: This course is designed specifically for the graphic designer whose objective is to function effectively in today’s commercial art field. Students will build professional portfolio samples while working on projects for real clients.

PREREQUISITES: Degree-seeking students should have completed all the required courses for their freshman year. Non-degree seeking students or returning professionals should be proficient with the Adobe Create Suite.

ADMISSION: A portfolio review is required for admission into this class. A grade point average of 3.0 is also required for degree-seeking students. To register for this class, sign-up for GDS 292 Graphic Design Studio (3 credits). This class may also be repeated for a total of 6 credits towards your degree.

SEMINAR: An optional freelance business practices seminar is included in this course.

GRADING POLICY: Completion of assigned project(s) is required in order to earn credit for this course (see grading rubric). All projects will be assigned a team grade and the entire team will receive the same grade. Your final semester grade will be determined as follows:

  • A = 100-91 (exceptional work beyond the class requirements)
  • B = 90-81 (excellent technical and creative abilities exhibited)
  • C = 80-71 (all projects completed and minimum goals achieved)
  • D = 70-61 (minimum goals not achieved)
  • F = 60 or less (failure to finish projects)

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory. Your semester grade will drop by one letter grade for every class meeting missed. Your grades and attendance record will be posted in Cobra Learning so that you can access them 24/7 from a web browser. 

MATERIALS: USB flash drive, felt tip pens, Gmail account, Parkland Identification.
