Objective
To learn print
production techniques by typesetting and producing a print-ready document for digital printing.

Procedure
preparing for the exercise
- download starter files
- inspect downloaded files
- open "book.indd" in InDesign, save as "recipe.indd"
- practice Adobe navigation keyboard shortcuts: space=hand; space+cmd=zoom in; space+cmd+opt=zoom out; cmd+zero=fit in window
- practice InDesign preview shortcuts: cmd+opt+I (show/hide hidden characters); W (normal/preview mode)
retouching the images in Photoshop
- open both JPEGs in photoshop
- crop tool: straighten image
- RMB > convert layer to smart object
- layer > new adjustment layer > levels: lighten midtones
- layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation: increase saturation
- filter > blur gallery > tilt-shift: blur=12 (test stacking order)
- repeat with other image
- save as PSD
designing the grid in InDesign
- go to master page (cmd+J: A)
- unlock "trim" layer
- widen trim boxes to max width; lock layer
- new layer "labels"
- add your name and exercise number to the bottom of each page;
lock layer
- go to page 3: (cmd+J: 3)
- file > place: "recipe.docx" (on "art" layer)
- window > type > paragraph styles: edit "no spacing", rename "text":
basic character formats:
11/13 Adobe Garamond Pro Regular
indents & spacing: space after=0, align to grid=all lines
- InDesign > preferences > grids: baseline grid: increment every 13pt, start=0
- view > grids & guides > show baseline grid
- split text into logical text frames, rough out layout
- draw picture frame: window > text wrap: left offset=1p
- cut all text frames
- go to master page (cmd+J: A)
- edit > paste in place (cmd+opt+shift+V)
- new layer "grids": draw vertical guides as needed; lock
- adjust layout: snap to grids
- new layer "folio": draw text frame, fill=black, stroke=white (.75pt)
- type > insert special characters > markers > current page number
- spec semibold, white
- type > tabs: add centered tab at 1p6
- object > text frame options: vertical justification: align=center (cmd+B)
- lock "folio" layer
- go to page 3: (cmd+J: 3)
making styles in InDesign
- make fractions
- add thin spaces
- add foreign accents
- new character style "small caps": basic character formats: case=open type all small caps
- select first paragraph
- new paragraph style "text+first":
apply to selection=yes, based on="text"; drop caps and nested styles: new line style="small caps" (for 1 line)
- apply to "ingredients" and "procedure"
- select 2nd/3rd paragraph
- new paragraph style "text+indent":
based on="text"; indents & spacing: first line indent=2p
- insert TAB character before/after each number in ingredients list
- select ingredients list
- new paragraph style "text+outdent":
based on="text"; tabs: right=1p4, left=2p; indents & spacing: left indent=2p, first line indent= -2p
- select procedure list
- type > bullets & numbered lists > apply numbers
- new paragraph style "text+numbers":
based on="text"; bullets & numbering: alignment=right, left indent=1p8, first line indent= -0p6, mode=continue from previous number; open type features: figure style=tabular lining
- select "Lamb Pilaf"
- opt+new paragraph style "h1":
based on="text"; basic character formats: size=26, leading=26, tracking=-10; indents & spacing: space after=0p13; hyphenation=off
finishing the layout
- file > place: PSD files
- scale, crop, adjust layout
- add name and exercise number to "labels" layer
- file > PDF export "book-trim.pdf": presets=high quality (pages 2-3, spreads):
- open PDF in acrobat, print color proof on tabloid paper
grading
- submit color proofs with your name and exercise number on it for grading
- file your graded proof in your Process Book for individual review
