InDesign: Creating Paragraph Styles

Objective

To create and apply paragraph styles.

Procedure
  1. download and unzip the starter files
  2. examine ICE_Program.pdf
  3. launch InDesign
  4. file > new: letter, portrait, facing pages=yes, columns=2, gutter=1p6, margins (unlink): top/bottom=4p, inside/outside=3p,
  5. file > place: ConferenceSessions.doc (shift+CLICK upperleft corner of text frame
  6. type > show hidden characters (cmd+opt+I)
  7. file > save as ICE_Program.indd
  8. window > swatches: new color "orange": M=56, Y=90

creating paragraph styles

  1. window > paragraph styles: edit "normal" style:
    • preview=yes
    • basic character formats: 9.5/12 Helvetica Neue LT Std 65 Medium
    • indents & spacing: space after=0p9
    • keep options: keep lines together=yes (2/2)
    • hyphenation=yes (8/3/3/2/3), uncheck the boxes
  2. select line 1
  3. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "h1"; apply style to selection=yes
    • basic character formats: 16/18 Helvetica Neue LT Std 95 Black
    • indents & spacing: space after=1p0
    • keep options: keep with next=1; all lines in paragraph=yes
    • hyphenation: off
    • character color=orange
  4. select line 2
  5. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "h2" (based on "h1"):
    • basic character formats: 16/18 Helvetica Neue LT Std 65 Medium
    • character color=black
  6. select line 3
  7. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "session time" (based on "h2"):
    • indents & spacing: space before=1p, space after=0
    • paragraph rules: rule above=yes, weight=.75 pt, offset=1p8, keep in frame=yes
  8. select "General Interest"
  9. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "session topic" (based on "normal"):
    • basic character formats: 8/8 Helvetica Neue LT Std 95 Black
    • indents & spacing: left indent=0p3, space before=0p9, space after=0p6
    • paragraph rules: rule above=yes, weight=10 pt, color: orange (50%), offset=–0p2, right indent=13p0, keep in frame=yes
    • keep options: keep with next=1; all lines in paragraph=yes
  10. select "Welcome"
  11. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "session title" (based on "normal"):
    • basic character formats: 10.5/12.5 Helvetica Neue LT Std 95 Black
    • indents & spacing: space after=0p
    • hyphenation=off
    • keep options: keep with next 1 lines, keep all lines together=yes
  12. select "Mark..."
  13. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "session speaker" (based on "session title"):
    • basic character formats: 9.5/12 Helvetica Neue LT Std 65 Medium
  14. select "Siskiyou..."
  15. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "session location" (based on "normal"):
    • basic character formats: 66 Medium Italic

working with bulleted lists

  1. go to page 2, select the 3 bulleted paragraphs
  2. type > bulleted & numbered lists > apply bullets
  3. window > paragraph: first line left indent=-0p9, left indent=0p9
  4. delete manually inserted bullets
  5. window > paragraph styles: option+new style "normal+bullets"
  6. re-organize styles list
  7. apply styles to all 4 pages
  8. go to master page: draw new text frame in top margin
  9. type > insert special character > marker > current page number
  10. add your name and exercise number (style=session title)
  11. repeat for right hand page

grading

  1. submit b&w proof with your name and exercise number on it for grading
  2. file your graded proof in your Process Book for individual review
