Field Trip 2: UIUC Printing Department

To gain a historical perspective about graphic design. To conduct first-hand research by meeting and talking with professionals in the field.

Enter the 2-story part of the building, proceed to the 1st floor hallway of the breezeway. There is street parking, but you will need quarters to feed the meter.

Description

University of Illinois' Printing Department is not just a printer. In addition to providing printing services for U of I units using the latest digital technology, they are also a living graphic arts museum. Stored at their facilities is a treasure of historical objects including an Intertype machine (similar to a Linotype), metal type and letterpress machinery. On this field trip, students will be able to look at and touch the technology that made history in the graphic arts field.

Procedure

We will meet promptly at the time and location specified above. It is recommended that you arrive early at the specified location. Anticipate parking problems. Leave early. If you are late, you may not be allowed to join the tour.

Note taking is highly recommended. Material covered during field trips will be on the quiz scheduled this semester.
