Description

Krannert Art Museum has a large permanent collection of important works which include examples of early stone lithography. For this field trip, the museum has agreed to pull a selection from their archives just for Parkland students to view. Although reproductions of these works are available in many books, to see these original lithographic stone posters up close and at actual size is a very different experience. Expect to see original prints similar to these examples:

• Jules Cheret: Saxoleine (lithograph 1894)
• Marcel Duchamp: DADA (lithograph 1916–1923)
• Alphonse Mucha: Leslie Carter (lithograph 1908)
• Henri Thiriet: Griffiths Cycles and Accessoires (lithograph 1898)
• Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: Moulin Rouge-La Goulue (lithograph 1891)
• Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: Jane Avril (lithograph 1893)

Please note the following rules for this field trip:

• Leave large objects, umbrellas, and heavy coats in your vehicle. Backpacks and large bags should be left in the coin-operated lockers near the entrances. The museum no longer allows visitors to leave items with the guards at the front desk. The quarter to use the locker will be returned to you when you remove your items.
• Use pencils, not pens, for writing or sketching.
• Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in the galleries.
• Respect others and keep noise to a minimum.
• Photographs of artworks are allowed of works owned by Krannert Art Museum, as long as you turn your flash off. Check with a guard before using your camera.
• Please do not touch the art. Help us preserve the art on display for future generations.
• Move slowly and carefully in the galleries. Do not lean on walls or cases, and do not use them as writing surfaces.

Procedure

1. Visit each host's website before the field trip (linked above when available). It always helps to know a little about each location before your visit.
2. Write down a few questions you may wish to ask during your field trip.
3. Please arrange your own car pooling. If you are driving, familiarize yourself with the area by inspecting the map link above. It is recommended that you arrive early. Anticipate traffic and parking problems. If you are late, you may not be allowed to join the tour.
4. When you are in our host’s space, please show respect by not talking amongst yourselves or making unnecessary noise. There will always be a question-and-answer period during the tour. If at all possible, save your questions until then.
5. Note taking is highly recommended. Material covered during field trips could be on the quiz scheduled later this semester.
