When can I submit an application?
Applications will be available online at universityymca.org/bailey beginning March 1.
The deadline to submit an application is April 16.

When I will be notified if I have been selected as a Bailey Scholar?
Applicants will be notified in mid-June as to whether or not they have been selected to receive a Bailey Scholarship.

Should I apply for a Bailey Scholarship or a Bailey Leadership Award?
All entering freshman, upcoming sophomores, and upcoming juniors are eligible to apply for a Bailey Scholarship. Upcoming seniors, that is, students who intend to graduate during the following academic year, may apply for the Bailey Leadership Awards only. Bailey Leadership Awards are given out to each of four categories of action: Social Justice, Environmental, Faith in Action, and International. Issues You may only submit an application to one of these categories.

Is there a minimum GPA requirement?
There is no minimum GPA required to be eligible as a Bailey Scholar. However, academic achievement is considered in evaluating applications.

Is there an income requirement?
There is no income requirement to be eligible as a Bailey Scholar. However, financial need is considered in evaluating applications.

I don’t have an electronic copy of my family’s tax forms. What should I do?
The online application features a “Fax to File” tool that allows you to create an electronic copy of your tax form using a fax machine. For instructions on how to use this tool, click on the “Fax to File” link on the left menu of the application. Follow the instructions provided. If you experience difficulty, contact the Bailey Scholarship Office at baileyscholar@universityymca.org or (217) 337-1514.

Who should I ask to be a reference?
A good reference should be familiar with your involvement and impact in your community. References can be an advisor, an instructor, a fellow organization member, a volunteer supervisor, a community leader, or anyone else who can speak to your character, passions, leadership, and how you are making a difference.

Who evaluates my application?
Bailey Readers are the volunteers responsible for selecting Bailey Scholars. They are made of University YMCA board members, Y alumni, community leaders and activists, and University of Illinois faculty and staff. I received a Bailey scholarship previously.
Can I still apply?
Students who received a Bailey Scholarship prior to Fall 2010 may apply for either a Bailey Scholarship or a Bailey Leadership Award. Students, who received a Bailey Scholarship after Spring 2010, may not reapply for a Bailey Scholarship but may apply for a Bailey Leadership Award for their senior year.
